Chapter Five
That night at dinner, Fitz still felt tied up in knots over his decision, but he knew he would not change his mind. Though he might likely question his sanity. Still, he would bed Mellie before the house party ended. Most likely tomorrow night - Christmas Eve - when most of the guests would be otherwise occupied themselves. It seemed like the best time, one of the few times when it was unlikely anyone would discover what they were up to.
But first he had to make certain that Baron Rockville did not deflower her first. And the man was certainly making a valiant effort on that front.
Fitz had been late coming down to dinner. In fact, it was a miracle he had made it at all, given how hard he still was after a long and delightful afternoon of Mellie lying in his arms and caressing him. Not to mention him caressing her in return. He hadn't yet informed her of his decision to take her up on her offer, but after the way they had carried on together, she had to know that he had already decided to bed her. Still, when they had parted later that afternoon, the stuffed bear still tucked securely under her arm, she had to know what was to come. She was not a stupid lady, after all.
And the very thought of lying with her, of entering her body for the first time nearly drove Fitz insane with lust. So it had rather taken awhile for him to collect himself and come down to dinner in an appropriate state.
Of course, when he arrived in the drawing room to find Mellie being pawed at by the baron once again, Fitz found himself in a less than appropriate state once more. Only this time, he was furious.
With what he hoped was a calm demeanor, he strolled over to where Mellie was nearly trapped against a wall between a large Christmas tree and the baron's arm. She was clearly doing her best to get away from him, but the tree - a custom that he did not realize Lady Raynecourt enjoyed - was a monstrous affair, and while pretty, was also next to impossible to navigate around without crashing into furniture or other guests. Most likely, the baron had arranged his encounter with Mellie that way for just that purpose.
"Baron. Lady Mellie," Fitz offered by way of a greeting. He really didn't want to mention Rockville's name if he could help it. Then he raised an eyebrow in the baron's direction. "I really did not expect to see you here this evening." There was more than a little threat in his voice and he could see that the other man took his meaning.
"I was, er, just saying to Lady Amelia how sorry I was that my interest in her the other evening was misinterpreted."
This should be interesting, Fitz thought to himself.
"Do tell." Fitz positioned himself beside Mellie so that it appeared that the two of them were allied against the baron.
